Muse Is OpenClaw for Normies
Meta's Muse AI hit #1 on the App Store with 5M downloads in three weeks. Turns out it was inspired by an open-source project called OpenClaw — right down to the file names.
Meta’s Muse AI agent hit number one on the App Store. Five million downloads in three weeks. Mark Zuckerberg calls it “the centerpiece of Meta AI strategy” — personal super intelligence for everyone.
But here’s what actually happened.
Nat Friedman admitted Muse was heavily inspired by OpenClaw. He bought hundreds of Mac minis so his team could use OpenClaw before building Muse. Called the creator a genius. Then Meta shipped something with nearly identical file names — including the same SOUL.md.
So the world’s first “personal AI agent for everyone” is OpenClaw for normies. Running on a VM Meta controls, reading your emails, shopping for you.
What Muse Actually Does
To be fair, Muse does real things:
- Books travel and cancels subscriptions
- Fills out school forms
- Integrates with Walmart, GameStop, Gap, Wayfair
Walmart is notable because Amazon blocked Muse from its site. They don’t want Zuck’s AI finding deals.
Meta’s Full-Court Press
Meta is going all-in. A Muse Charm keychain device is coming this holiday. Ray-Ban AI glasses — 100 styles of AI glasses by year’s end. A $14 billion data center partnership with BlackRock. Zuck says billions of people will have agents within five years. Meta has spent $145 billion on AI infrastructure.
The Catch
They built an agent that looks like the open-source project that inspired it. They sell it as safe, easy AI for everyone — while running a VM that watches everything you do.
Maybe that’s personal super intelligence. Or maybe it’s OpenClaw with a privacy policy and a keychain charm.
Bottom line: The most-downloaded AI app of 2026 is a rebranded open-source project with Meta’s privacy policy bolted on. Judge for yourself whether that’s innovation or wrapping.
